What this format is

TCX is Garmin’s older XML format. It holds laps, heart rate, and cadence well. GPX is what most maps and Komoot expect.

How to get the file

  1. From Garmin Connect
  2. 1. Activity → ⋯ → Export as TCX.
  3. 2. Drop the .tcx file here.
  1. From Strava
  2. 1. Activity → wrench → Export TCX, then drop it here if you need GPX instead.

Questions

Where do I get a TCX file?

Garmin Connect: activity → ⋯ → Export as TCX. Strava: the wrench menu → Export TCX.

Are laps preserved?

Lap splits flatten into one GPX track. GPS, time, heart rate, cadence and power are kept.

Why convert at all?

Most maps, Komoot and a lot of planning tools want GPX. TCX is what older Garmin and TrainingPeaks exports still produce.
