What this format is

FIT is Garmin’s compact activity format. Most mapping apps want GPX. The conversion happens on this page; the FIT file never leaves your computer.

How to get the file

  1. From Garmin Connect
  2. 1. Open the activity in Garmin Connect (web).
  3. 2. Click the ⋯ menu on the right → Export original or Export as FIT.
  4. 3. Drop the .fit or .fit.gz file here.
  1. From Strava
  2. 1. Open the activity → the wrench icon → Export GPX if you only need the track.
  3. 2. For original FIT, request a full account export and use the Strava export tool.

What is kept and what is lost

KeptLost or missing
GPS, elevation, timestampsDevice settings, lap alerts, and some manufacturer-specific FIT fields
Heart rate, cadence, temperature, powerNothing in those four if the FIT recorded them — they are written into the GPX extension

Questions

Will heart rate and power still be in the GPX?

Yes. They are written into Garmin’s TrackPointExtension (and a power extension), which Garmin Connect and Strava both read.

Is there a file size limit?

No upload means no server cap. A long ride or a .fit.gz from a bulk export is fine; the work happens on this device.

Do I need a Garmin or Switchback account?

No. Drop the .fit, run the converter, download the GPX. Nothing is stored here.
